Our client, a globally operating industrial enterprise, is operating within a rapidly evolving sector significantly influenced by technological advancements and a fast-paced cycle of innovations. In this context, the increasingly important value creation in the software domain and the diminishing relevance of technological “hardware” stand out. To respond to these progressively rapid changes, the company initiated a strategic restructuring of one of its most significant business units to firmly embed the critical role of software at the organizational level.
In order to strengthen the global market position, the global orientation of activities in one of the company’s largest business units had to be accelerated and a comprehensive transformation process was initiated. This process included not only the reorganization of existing structures, but also the implementation of new working methods and processes to meet the requirements of the global market. A particular focus was placed on strengthening software development capacities to reflect the increasing importance of software in the industry.
Our approach was divided into three main areas: (1) analyzing the operating model, (2) operational support and (3) communication strategy.
First, the current operating model was analyzed and recommendations for the future operating model were derived. The strategy, the organizational and process structures, and the technologies used were considered. We then not only supported the implementation of individual recommendations, but also provided operational support for selected projects. For example, we took on the project management of cross-divisional and strategically relevant software development projects.
The third project focused on communication strategy, we developed and implemented customized communication initiatives for designing a globally integrated organization in line with the three dimensions of “Why”, “How” and “What” to support an organizational transformation creating a global structure. An essential part of the project was the development of strategic narratives for the new structure. The team was able to derive the following narratives by analyzing the market situation and an internal values campaign.
The development and implementation of a holistic operating model has created synergies between different areas of the Business Unit. This promotes collaboration and the exchange of knowledge across departmental boundaries, which can lead to increased innovative strength and higher product quality. The clear organizational and process structures help to make work more efficient and transparent. Appropriate technologies complement the collaboration and form the basis for future technological innovations. The clear strategic focus makes it possible to deploy resources in a more targeted manner and set priorities to enable optimized product development and a faster market launch.
